Death

19/04/2010

During the rampjaar of 1672, which in Dutch refers to the “year of disaster”, France and England attacked the Republic during the Franco-Dutch War, and the Orangists took power by force and deposed de Witt. Recovering from an earlier attempt on his life in June, he was lynched by an organized mob after visiting his brother Cornelis de Witt in prison. He had been duped into this trap by a forged letter requesting the visit.

After the arrival of Johan de Witt the city guard was sent away on a pretext to stop farmers who were supposedly engaged in pilfering. Without any protection against the assembled mob the brothers were doomed. They were dragged out of the prison and killed next to a nearby scaffold. Immediately after their death the bodies were horribly mutilated and fingers, toes, and other parts of their bodies were cut off. Their hearts were carved out to be exhibited as trophies. Today this is seen by the Dutch as the most shameful event in the history of Dutch politics.

Shiftless

14/02/2010

The people who were better than us were comfortable.

They lived in painted houses with flush toilets.

Drove cars whose year and make were recognizable.

The ones worse off were sorry and didn’t work.

Their strange cars sat on blocks in dusty yards.

The years go by and everything and everyone gets replaced.

But this much is still true-I never liked work.

My goal was always to be shiftless.

I saw the merit in that.

I liked the idea of sitting in a chair in front of your house

for hours,

doing nothing but wearing a hat and drinking cola.

What’s wrong with that?

Drawing on a cigarette from time to time.

Spitting.

Making things out of wood with a knife.

Where’s the harm there?

Now and then calling the dogs to hunt rabbits.

Try it sometime. Once in a while hailing a fat, blond kid like me and saying, “Don’t I know you?” Not, “What are you going to be when you grow up?”

The mysterious Ghost Man paints himself into his environs without photo trickery. He’s a chameleon lurking in junkyards, prairies and urban landscapes like Where’s Waldo.

When You’re Strange

03/12/2009

Award-winning writer-director Tom DiCillo’s riveting film uncovers historic, previously unseen footage from the illustrious rock quartet and provides new insight into the revolutionary impact of their music and legacy.

The creative chemistry of four brilliant artists – drummer John Densmore, guitarist Robby Kreiger, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, and singer Jim Morrison – made The Doors one of America’s most iconic and influential rock bands. When You’re Strange is the first feature documentary to tell their story. Using footage shot between their formation in 1965 and Morrison’s death in 1971, it follows the band from the corridors of UCLA’s film school, where Manzarek and Morrison met, to the stages of sold-out arenas.

Taking its title from the cabaret-tinged Doors hit “People Are Strange,” the film chronicles the creation of The Doors’ six landmark studio albums in just five years, as well as their electrifying live performances. Rare cinèma vèritè footage offers an intimate glimpse into their musical collaboration – and their offstage lives.
